about

Hannah Bartos is a visual artist and social documentary photographer.

She has attracted critical recognition for her work at a national and international level; notably, short-listing for several prizes and nomination for awards.

In her artistic practice, she is fascinated with boundaries. That is, how society is organised and patterns of human interaction.

Through her work, Hannah contemplates alternative ways of looking at specific social and cultural topics. She is drawn to exploring areas of life that are poorly understood or overlooked as mundane, reflecting upon unseen experiences and the interplay between private and public spheres of life.

Her creative process is research-led, drawing upon sociological theories; notably, her work deals broadly with the creation of meaning in society and focuses specifically on themes of identity, representation, and differentiation.

As part of her inquiry, Hannah conducts interviews and archival research, as well as recording audio and utilising documentation. Alongside medium format photographs, her work encompasses video and the production of 3D installations.

A former student of Central Saint Martin's College and a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, Hannah has a Ph.D. in Sociology and Religion and recently received a 'Distinction' at Masters level for Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the London College of Communication (UAL).
